Hello
My name is Janelle McCann and I am a certified personal trainer and yoga instructor. I started my fitness journey with my passion for running, which conditioned me to push beyond my own mental and physical limits. Practicing yoga has brought balance and taught me techniques for stress reduction and how to retain my peace of mind.
My philosophy for training is about intentional design- shaping your body and mind based on practices and habits. I look forward to sharing my love of movement and mindfulness with you!
My Story
My journey into fitness started with my love for running and has evolved to yoga and power lifting. Before becoming a fitness professional, I worked in the exhibition department at an art museum. I was responsible for handling art work, creating shipping crates and soft packaging, and installing exhibitions. During this time period I started to learn about how to strength train so that I could meet the demands of the job. To combat stress I started training for races like 5k's, 10k's, then half marathons and full marathons as well as obstacle races.
After finishing my first marathon, I felt so accomplished, proud, and filled with a desire to teach others how to reach high goals. I started personal training in 2014 and since then have had the pleasure of helping others reach their goals and improve their confidence. Since then I have helped several clients train for races and other goals.
Building relationships with my clients is my favorite part of the training. I enjoy suggesting group outings like races, hikes, kayaking trips, or other events as a way to connect and motivate. Some of my favorite events with my clients have been the Super Hero 5k at Carthage College and the 20 mile Mammoth March.
My proudest physical achievements are related to victories in areas of endurance and strength. In terms of endurance, I was proud of being able to comfortably go on a 10 to 12 mile hike every day for a week in the Rocky Mountain National Park with my husband. I am proud that my level of conditioning allows me to experience nature in a way that might otherwise be inaccessible. After training for endurance, I decided to train for strength and was able to hit bench marks on my squat, lifting close to 2x my weight. I have come a long way from when I first started squatting on a stability ball to barbell squats. I was once afraid of the weight room and now I am the one loading up my barbell and pushing my limits.
Letter to New Clients
My message to anyone wanting to be fit and coming from a non athletic background is simple.
1. Believe in Yourself - You can do this! I have empathy and compassion for wanting to start moving later in life. I know it is hard for many reasons and I can support you in the process. Be willing to start again! You are stronger than you know! I never thought I could: run a marathon, lift heavy weights, teach group classes - yet over time with training I have shattered these limiting beliefs.
2. Trust in Your Coach and the Process- I have the knowledge and experience to understand how to craft an adaptable program for you to become healthier. Becoming stronger later in life sometimes is not a linear process, but if you stick with it you can overcome any obstacle. Don't give up!
3. Be willing to be uncomfortable - Transformation and change take heat, energy, and a willingness to get out of your comfort zones. My approach helps people become more resilient to stress, embrace challenges, and learn to expand their comfort zone at an individual pace.
4. Celebrate Your Accomplishments- Throughout training with clients, I draw their attention to their progress. Realizing where you started, what you have gained, and understanding the milestones you have reached creates momentum and fosters confidence. The most important relationship you have is with yourself! I am here to build you up and help you see your progress and celebrate your wins.
